My take: It's easy to emphasize the negative especially when we are talking about the man who battles for the position of worlds richest person with Bill Gates, but let us leave that negativity out the door and see what we can learn from him, at least what I have learned from him personally.
Lesson 1: Stay in Business at all cost, profitable or not. It took 10 years from its founding in 1994 for Amazon to report its first profit. All this while Bezos focused on growth, growing the company larger and larger and delaying any profit-taking for later. Now Amazon bigger than many fortune 500s put together.
Lesson 2: You don't need to be a visionary like Jobs to build a good business. While most of the time we are looking for that massive visionary idea will give us everything we desire, sometimes all we really need is just picking one product and expanding from there. Bezos started out with books but went ahead to expand into almost anything including movies, music and every conceivable product out there.
Lesson 3: Learn operations research and logistics. Amazon is a logistics monster and one of the biggest reasons people rely on it every day for everything from groceries to anything you can think of is because Amazon runs some of the most complicated logistics operations on earth. Although you can always hire people to do these things, knowing them yourselves will help with your planning process.
Lesson 4: Get familiar with numbers, Bezos came from wall street so you get my point.
